A visit to UNESCO heritage site Ait Benhaddou

We recently returned from a buying trip, this time to the ancient walled city of Ait Benhaddou. Located in the province of Ouarzazate on the historical trade route between Marrakech and the Sahara, the fortified town is distinguished by its large Kasbah forts and numerous clay palaces and homes which embody typical Moroccan architecture. While the town is largely uninhabited now several local families continue to live within the confines of the old city, which is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Some of the mosques and buildings date as far back as the 17th century and are regularly maintained by the Moroccan government to preserve their authenticity and charm.

The focus of this trip was to source more high quality textiles and pottery for our showroom, with an emphasis on authentic craftsmanship. After an enthusiastic opening we hope to build upon consumer demand and deliver more fresh and exciting materials to our home in Dar Sol!
